  18. Let me add the following to Mark Thompson's list of reasons that bugs
  19. persist in released software:

  21. 6.  Some bugs *are* found that for various reasons don't get fixed.
  22.  
  23. The bug list is prioritized by severity, and with time pressures the
  24. items at the bottom of the list might never be addressed.  For a while
  25. I had a good dozen bugs that I'd look for first in every beta version,
  26. and a couple of them are *still* there.
  27.  
  28. Obviously not everyone will agree about the relative severity of a bug,
  29. especially the ones they find themselves.  It also happens occasionally 
  30. that no one knows how to fix what may be a very well-known and nasty
  31. problem.
  32.  
  33. Better communication would alleviate some of this.  Testers should be
  34. getting a detailed change history and a list of known bugs so that we
  35. don't have to start from square one with every rev--that's one every
  36. week or two for the past year--and so the development process is well
  37. documented, and so we know that *they* know, and so on.
  38.  
  39. And...well, they've heard all of this from me already.
